Last night I was chatting online with Shannon and randomly started sending her silly, but real, reasons why I was excited about moving to Washington. She said, “That sounds like a good blog post.” Haha, I was already planning on that! Shannon also did a blog post today with a list of 5 Things. But her list is way, way, way different than mine.
So here they are, five silly, but real reasons that I think it will be fun to live in Washington.
1. I can’t wait to live close to a REAL big city.
And by REAL big city I mean that Seattle is a custom location on Twitter Trending Topics. It also has it’s own traffic station on XM Radio. They have a rail system for public transportation! There are two – count them, TWO – Anthropologie stores in the area. Also, the flagship Nordstrom store is there. There have been countless movies and TV shows set in Seattle, like Sleepless in Seattle, Gray’s Anatomy, Frasier. Ever heard of a TV show being set in Oklahoma City? NOPE.
Really what isn’t to love about all that?
2. I will get to eat apples in their actual place of origin.
Washington State grows the best organic apples on Earth. Some of you may not know this because it wasn’t included in my “25 Things About Me” that everyone was doing this time last year, but I eat an apple *almost* every day. That’s right. An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Seems to work. I’m a pretty healthy gal. My favorite apples are Fuji or Honeycrisp. So, I love apples. And guess what? Some of the homes we’ve looked at actually have apple trees in their back yards!
3. Canadian TV, eh? For sure!
So I also love all things Canadian. I don’t know why. I just do. I love it that it’s cold there. That they have to plug their cars in during the winter. That they speak french. That Toronto is supposed to be a lot like Paris. That the Canadian Rocky Mountains are one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been on Earth.
Mostly I love Canadian Indie Rock. Some of my favorites are The Stars, The Bicycles, Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade, and many, many more to list. Maybe I’ll actually get to see some of them in the REAL big city of Seattle.
We will only be about 60 miles from the Canadian border in Anacortes and about an hour and a half from Vancouver, BC. I Can. Not. Wait. Have Passport… will cross borders.
4. Tulips are my most favoritest flower in the whole world.
Kami Fact #236: I love tulips. LOVE them. They are so pretty with their clean lines and pastel colors. I love that they look so fragile. Wouldn’t you know that Skagit County is home to the largest tulip farms in the United States? And that many tulip bulbs are exported to Holland where they are grown and shipped as “Holland Tulips?” (This area of Washington has the mild climate similar to that of Holland and Northern France.) And, get this: Skagit County hosts an Annual Tulip Festival! Count me in.
5. The time difference means that I can stay up really, really late with Shannon, but not actually be up really, really late.
Almost every night I “talk” with my longtime BFF (think 20+ years) on Skype or iChat. We usually begin our chat sessions around 10:00 p.m. and usually end around 12:00 or 1:00 a.m. That is really late, people. We’re aren’t necessarily constantly IM’ing. But it’s like sitting in the same room with her every night, discussing things as they come up, sharing ideas, links, photos. We’ve been this way for oh, 20+ years, talking on the phone as teens all night long sometimes. I remember Shannon’s dad asking us what on Earth we could be talking about since we had just spent the whole day together at school. Er, I think our husbands wonder this same thing now. About the talking. Not about school.
Problem is that she’s a working gal, and I’m a working gal. And me staying up past midnight and getting up at 6:30 a.m. to go to work, run and do whatever else I do that consumes my day can lead to a tired and cranky Kam.
A quick move to the West Coast and all our problems are solved! See. When I sit down to get online at, say, 9:00 p.m. PST it will be 11:00 p.m. CST. We can talk for a couple of hours, and I’m still in bed by 11 PST… 1:00 Shannon’s time, which is her usual bedtime. Perfect!
So there you have it. 5 Silly Reasons Why I’m Excited to Move to Washington! What do you think? Valid reasons to move 2,200 miles?

Yes! Well, Kami, coming from a girl that was born and raised in the great northwest, I LOVED this blog post. We have a mutual friend, Dave Bennet, and he had mentioned to me awhile back that he had a friend moving out in my direction. I live in Everett, which is about 30 minutes north of Seattle…but I love it. Mountain ranges on both sides of me, the Puget Sound at my fingertips, evergreens EVERYWHERE. I think you will love calling it home!

Another good thing about living in Washington is that you won’t have this crazy Oklahoma weather. 65 degrees one day then snow and ice the next. (Not that I want you to go. Just saying.) Love you!

Hi Kami. I just discovered your little gem of a blog (so cute/fun). I also just discovered that you’re moving to Washington. It sounds like you are going to be very happy there. Heck, who wouldn’t be?!? Don’t forget all the beauty that Oregon has to offer too (you must go to the beach Goonie’s was filmed at!). I’m very happy for you guys…but Oklahoma is losing one cool gal. Please keep your website updated and I hope we can stay in touch.
xxx Alia
[post script] my sister just called and told me she’s naming her baby Kamila.
